Curtin University expanded its comprehensive digital marketing initiatives during its August Open Day by including a mobile app with iBeacon proximity technology.
Hello Curtin is a proximity aware app that was developed on iOS and Android for prospective students to obtain information based on their proximity whilst on Campus. 25 iBeacons were strategically deployed around Campus allowing the students to receive information based on their precise location, determined by the iBeacons communicating with their smartphones.
The objective was to enable and simplify the discovery of course-based information but other interactive content could also be revealed through the app such as … When off Campus, the App displayed the Curtin University mobile-responsive Open Day website allowing continued interaction by future students.
1,401 prospective students registered on the Hello Curtin App, 85% of users were on iOS and 15% used an Android operating system. This was judged as an excellent means of gathering accurate student leads for Curtin University.
On average, students visited three different proximity-enabled locations and generated more than 4,050 individual information pushes.
Curtin University Platforms Manager, Anthony Green said “The pilot at Open Day exceeded our expectations and we learnt a great deal from the data collected. This has helped inform how we can integrate the platform at large scale events with the beacon integration planned at Orientation Week and other on campus activity. The iPX™ system was very easy to learn and setting up the beacons, building campaigns and reviewing the analytics was user friendly.”
Curtin University partnered with Australian technology company iProximity to develop the proximity based services. iProximity developed the Hello Curtin App, provided the iBeacons and their cloud-based management platform known as the iPX™.
iProximity co-founder, David Burden said “We are delighted that Curtin was one of the first universities globally to roll out proximity based information services during their Open Day. We are also very pleased that it was such a success and that there are plans to further incorporate proximity based services across the University.”
